My First Tracked Mow: What the Data Revealed
Session Summary
Duration
45 minutes
Distance
1.2 miles
Mower
Honda HRX217
Deck Height
3.5 inches
Weather
Partly cloudy, 78°F
I've been building MowDaddy to solve a simple problem: I had no idea how much time I actually spent mowing my lawn. Today, I finally used it to track a complete session. Here's what the data showed me.
What I Expected vs. Reality
Before tracking, I would have guessed my mowing takes about 30 minutes. The actual data? 45 minutes. That's 50% longer than I thought. This is exactly why I built MowDaddy - our perception of time while doing yard work is way off.
The GPS Path Was Eye-Opening
Looking at my mowing path on the map, I could see exactly where I went. A few things jumped out:
- I doubled back over some areas more than I realized
- My "straight lines" were not as straight as I thought
- The edges around obstacles took more passes than the open areas
This isn't about being "efficient" - it's just interesting to finally see what I'm actually doing out there.
Distance Traveled: 1.2 miles
I walked 1.2 miles pushing my mower around the yard. Over a mowing season (let's say 25-30 mows), that adds up to 30+ miles of walking behind a mower. Not a bad workout, actually.
What I'll Track Next Time
Now that I have a baseline, I'm curious about a few things:
- Does mowing in a different pattern change my time?
- How does the duration change as grass grows faster in spring vs. fall?
- What's the difference between bagging and mulching?
This is what MowDaddy is really about - building a history so you can actually answer these questions with data instead of guessing.
